HISTORY OF THE MUSEUM - MUSEUM MOHAMMED MAHMOUD KHALIL

Mohammed Mahmoud Khalil and his wife's mansion was build in 1915. Its eastern side overlooks the Nile and contains Arnoveau's French art style, which can be seen in the metal and glass work at the palace's entrance. The western side of the building is decorated in a neo-classical style with a variety of embellishments. The massive mullioned window on the north side is very remarkable. Visitors on the first and second levels may see the window above the inner steps, which is signed by French artist Lucien Mette (Paris-1970).

The palace's ground, first, and second floors hold the museum's galleries, while the basement includes administrative offices, the Library, the Information Centre, and a large lecture theatre. Until 1960, the palace was the home of Mohammed Khalil's family and the repository of his priceless art collection. On July 23, 1962, the palace was launched as a museum carrying the names of Mohammed Mahmoud Khalil and his wife Emiline Lock, in accordance with the will made out by his wife.

WHO IS MOHAMMED MAHMOUD KHALIL?

Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Pasha (1877-1941), served as Egypt's Prime Minister twice. art enthusiast, was also a politician, cabinet minister, and Senate Speaker.

After co-founding and chairing the Society of Lovers of Fine Arts in 1924, he had a significant role in developing Egypt's cultural movement by financing the fine art movement.

Mohammed Mahmoud Khalil also contributed to the improvement of cultural contact between Egypt and France in the first half of the twentieth century. His hard work and commitment were recognised when he received the most prestigious French medals and prizes.

The museum's collection includes masterpieces by famous painters who made significant contributions to the movements of fine art in Europe in general, and France in particular, during the nineteenth century.

The majority of the museum's 208 paintings, however, are from the impressionist school, which provided the groundwork for the fine art movement in the twentieth century. Paul Gauguin, Auguste Renoir, Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, John Jongkind, and Charles Francois Daubigny are among the famous painters represented among the assets of Mohammed Mahmoud Khalil and his Wife Museum.

The museum's collection also includes works by eastern painters such as Eugene Fromentin.

Paul Gauguin, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Auguste Rodin, and Vincent van Gogh are among the famous painters whose paintings Mohammed Mahmoud Khalil and his wife have gifted. The Museum holds a magnificent collection of Impressionist paintings, mostly acquired before 1928, that rivals the majority of European National Collections.

The museum also has a rare collection of vases manufactured in France, China, Japan, and Iran, as well as a large collection of intricately made tiny works of art by Chinese craftsmen in precious stones, crystal de Roch, emerald, and coral.

Large-scale bronze, marble, and gypsum statues by prominent 19th-century artists including as Auguste Rodin, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Louis Antoine Barye, and Charles Cordier are also on display at the museum. Furthermore, the museum's displays contain a rare collection of miniature Japanese-style boxes.

POPPY FLOWERS PAINTING

BY VINCENT VAN GOGH 1886

Poppy Flowers (also known as Vase And Flowers and Vase with Viscaria) is a Vincent van Gogh artwork that is believed to be worth $50 million to $55 million.

The little picture, measuring 65 x 54 cm, displays yellow and red poppy blossoms. Van Gogh is said to have painted it around 1887, three years before his suicide. The artwork, which depicts a vase of yellow and red poppies on a black background, reflects Van Gogh's profound respect for Adolphe Monticelli, an older painter whose work impacted him when he saw it for the first time in Paris in 1886.

It was stolen twice from Cairo's Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum: once in 1977 (and found after a decade), and then again in August 2010 and has yet to be found
