THE EGYPTIAN TEXTILE MUSEUM ESTABLISED BY MUHAMMAD ALI PASHA

Muhammad Ali was born in Kavala, Macedonia, to an Albanian family from Korça. He was the second son of Ibrahim Agha, an Albanian tobacco and shipping businessman who also served as an Ottoman commander of a minor regiment in Kavala.

His mother was Zeynep, the daughter of orbaci Husain Agha, another well-known Muslim Albanian in Kavala. While Muhammad's father died when he was young, his uncle Husain Agha took him in and nurtured him together with his relatives. Muhammad Ali's uncle granted him the ra Ottoman officer rank comparable to captain for tax collection in the town of Kavala as a reward for his hard efforts. Later, Muhammad Ali married his cousin Amina Hanim, the daughter of Ali Agha and Kadriye

He, also known as Muhammad Ali of Egypt and the Sudan, was the Albanian Ottoman governor and de facto ruler of Egypt from 1805 to 1848, and is regarded as the foundation of modern Egypt. At the peak of his power, he ruled over Egypt, Sudan, Hejaz, and the whole Levant.

He was a military commander in an Albanian Ottoman force going to liberate Egypt from Napoleon's French control. Following Napoleon's retreat, Muhammad Ali ascended to power through a series of political machinations, and in 1805 he was proclaimed Wali (viceroy) of Egypt and elevated to the rank of Pasha, attempting to modernise Egypt by significant changes in the military, economic, and cultural realms.
